The Sales Pitch and the Reality
Walk into most flooring showrooms and you’ll hear one of two stories. If the salesperson is pushing solid hardwood, you’ll hear that engineered wood is ‘fake’ and won’t last. If they’re selling engineered hardwood, you’ll hear that solid hardwood ‘moves too much’ and is outdated. Both are exaggerations in service of a sale.
The honest comparison is more nuanced — and the right answer depends entirely on your specific home, climate, and installation location. Here’s what the conversation in the showroom should actually include.
What Engineered Wood Actually Is
Engineered hardwood is a real-wood product. The visible surface layer (called the veneer) is genuine hardwood — the same species you see on solid planks. Below it, the core is built from cross-layered plywood or HDF (high-density fiberboard). This cross-layered construction is what gives engineered wood its dimensional stability.
The quality range in engineered wood is enormous. A 6mm veneer engineered board from a reputable manufacturer is a different product entirely from a 2mm veneer engineered board from a discount supplier. The veneer thickness determines how many times you can sand and refinish the floor over its lifetime.
Dimensional Stability: Why It Matters for Your Specific Home
Solid hardwood moves. It expands when humidity rises and contracts when humidity drops — this is a characteristic of all wood, not a defect. In climates with extreme humidity swings (humid summers, dry heated winters), solid hardwood floors require careful moisture management: maintaining indoor humidity between 35–55% year-round. In homes without humidifiers or in climates where that range can’t be maintained, gaps between boards and cupping are common and frustrating.
Engineered hardwood’s cross-ply construction resists this movement significantly. This makes it the better choice for below-grade installations (basements), over radiant heat systems, and in climates with high humidity variation.
Refinishing Lifespan — The Calculation Most People Don’t Make
Solid hardwood (typically 3/4-inch thick) can be sanded and refinished 7–10 times over its lifetime. A quality engineered floor with a 4–6mm veneer can typically be refinished 3–5 times. A cheap engineered floor with a 2mm veneer may get one light sand before the veneer is gone.
The lifespan calculation isn’t just ‘which is more durable’ — it’s ‘how long will this floor look good before I need to replace rather than refinish it?’ For many homeowners, a quality engineered floor that lasts 40–50 years before replacement is entirely acceptable, especially if it enables installation on a concrete slab where solid hardwood isn’t appropriate.
Cost: Not What Most People Expect
Many people assume solid hardwood is always more expensive. That’s not consistently true. Mid-grade solid hardwood is frequently comparable in price to premium engineered hardwood. Budget engineered hardwood is cheaper than solid, but you’re also buying a product with a 2mm veneer that may not survive a single refinish.
The more relevant cost comparison includes installation: engineered hardwood can be floated (snapped together without fastening to the subfloor), which is a DIY-friendly option that saves labor cost. Solid hardwood typically requires nail-down installation, which requires a flooring nailer and more skill.
